How do I upload my site using FTP?

Uploading your site can be done either through FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or through our web-based file manager.

In general it is easier to upload sites using FTP, however the file manager is great when you are uploading away from the office or have only a few pages.

To use FTP to upload your site, you first need to get a FTP program. We recommend you download SmartFTP if you don't already have one. SmartFTP has a free trial which makes things easy.

Once you have your FTP program started it will ask you for a few simple settings to be able to connect. Using SmartFTP these settings can be seen at the top.

  • Address / Hostname: Enter your domain name
  • Username: Enter the username from your setup email
  • Password: Enter the password from your setup email

Once you have entered the settings, click on the icon in the top right-hand corner to connect.

As you connect, a new window will appear. This is your webspace. Click on the "public_html" folder to continue.

The public_html directory is the place all of the files for your website go. If you upload your website here, it displays whenever anyone enters your domain name.

Navigate to the folder on your computer that contains the website you have built using the "Local Browser" which is the other window.

Select all of the file for your site, and copy them across to the public_html directory.

That's it. Your site is published. Enter your domain name using Internet Explorer and you will see your site.
